About Dabkeh

Dabkeh is a traditional Levantine folk dance, and one of the most beloved and recognizable symbols of Palestinian culture. It's a line or circle dance performed with linked arms and hands, powerful synchronized footwork, and rhythmic stomping that echoes the beat of the drum (tabla) and the melody of the mijwiz or yarghul.

Origins & Tradition

Dabkeh's roots trace back to communal village life, where neighbors would gather to stomp down the earth and straw used to seal rooftops — a task that became rhythmic, cooperative, and eventually celebratory. Over time, it evolved into a joyful centerpiece of weddings, holidays, and community gatherings, danced by people of all ages.

How It's Danced

Dancers form a line or semicircle, often led by a raas (leader) at the front, who improvises steps, twirls a handkerchief or cane, and sets the pace for the group. The rest of the line follows in unison, stomping, kicking, and stepping in coordinated patterns that build in energy as the dance progresses.

A Symbol of Identity

For Palestinians, especially those in the diaspora, dabkeh carries meaning far beyond the dance floor. It's a living connection to homeland, heritage, and community — a way of saying "we are still here, still dancing, still together," passed down from one generation to the next.
